Jocko Willink, retired Navy SEAL, co-author of #1 New York Best Seller, Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win, and co-founder of Echelon Front LLC, a leadership consulting company, kicks off the Core Program. Jocko will share his unique story of overcoming challenges and obstacles as related to the 2024 LCI Congress theme, Surfing the Wave of Lean Design and Construction. Congress kicks off with a casual social in the Exhibit Hall, complete with beautiful San Diego views. The event includes complimentary popcorn and one free drink ticket per attendee (provided when Congress badges are picked up).

2024 Congress Tracks
Riding the Wave of Mutual Respect: Project Startup
This track explores the fundamental role of respect and collaboration in the initial stages of design, preconstruction, and construction. Sessions will showcase innovative approaches to project management, case studies of successful integrations, and strategies for balancing various project elements to start the project off on the path to high performance. With a focus on successes and challenges, this track will cover:
- Stories on team selection and building the right team
- Stories of onboarding to grow a Lean culture from the start
- Case studies of implementing and measuring Lean innovation in the design space
- Insights on leveraging BIM Modeling and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) with a Lean mindset
- Insights on leveraging prefabrication and industrialized construction to deliver more value to clients and project teams
- Discussions of how to leverage technology to improve team building and planning
Navigating the Flow for Excellence: Field Execution
This track is centered around the integration of flow enhancement, waste reduction, and value maximization in the construction industry. Sessions will showcase streamlined operations, efficient resource management, and effective value delivery to clients, illustrating how these principles come together to improve field execution and safety practices. Expect a focus on innovative technologies and practical management solutions that enhance productivity and ensure a smooth and efficient workflow. Through case studies featuring successes and setbacks, you’ll learn:
- How a Lean program can develop the next generation of field leaders
- Innovative practices that can optimize production, decrease waste, and promote safe practices
- How to support a Lean mindset in the field
- Tools, technology and processes that your team can implement during construction to add value (Last Planner System®, Takt Time, 5S, Daily Huddles, Gemba Walks, A3 Thinking, Just in Time Delivery, Problem Solving, Visual Controls, SCRUM, etc.)
Harmonizing the Voyage: Optimizing the Whole Project
These presentations concentrate on holistic project optimization, addressing how to integrate and synergize all project phases, levels, and partners. Sessions will showcase how fostering a mutual respect culture leads to more effective team dynamics, innovative problem-solving, and a more engaged workforce. Specific content will span:
- Methods and tools to maintain project wide focus on “optimizing the whole” not just individual parts
- Best practices for developing a Lean mindset across all stakeholders involved in and impacted by the project
- Innovative tools and methods to instill a culture of continuous improvement across the entire project, including case studies of tapping brain power in the field
- Facilitating a Lean culture and demonstrating behaviors across the project, best practices in on-boarding, sustaining engagement, respecting one another, and recognizing people
- Practices to establish and sustain a healthy team dynamic that respects all people while simultaneously challenging ideas and the status quo to find better ways
Cultivating Waves of Change: Scaling Continuous Improvement
Examine the implementation and scaling of organizational and cultural changes at the broader enterprise-wide, geographic, and market levels. Presentations will delve into continuous improvement methods, successful change management, repeatable solutions, and the integration of technology and tools. Sessions will highlight how these transformative approaches enhance performance and adaptability, mirroring the continuous evolution akin to navigating the ever-changing waves in the design and construction industry. This track includes content on:
- Scaling Lean implementation beyond the project and across the operations
- Embedding a culture of continuous improvement across the organization and having the systems to support organizational learning across the enterprise
- Achieving alignment across the enterprise on efforts to eliminate waste and create value
- Using organization-wide metrics, scorecards, and visual controls to maintain focus and drive behavior
- Coaching for Lean leadership throughout the organization to enable improvements as close to where the work is occurring as we can get
If you miss any content at Congress, you can catch up back home. Session audio recordings synced to presentation slides will be available to Congress registrants until mid-January 2025. LCI members will have access to the Congress recordings via their LCI Member Hub with no date cut-off.

Friday, October 25 (8 a.m. – 12 p.m.) — Congress Add-on
Experience Lean in action first-hand during a Gemba Tour of one of these unique projects.
Gemba Tours
San Diego International Airport Terminal 1
During this valuable Gemba Tour, learn how Lean tools and best practices, including Visual Management, 5S, Last Planner System, and Nothing Hits the Ground, supported this project.
University of California San Diego (UCSD) Hillcrest Redevelopment, Phase 1 and 2
This project encompasses a $525M multi-structure redevelopment of the UCSD medical campus in Hillcrest. Phase 1 and 2 of a 5-phase master plan includes a 255K SF outpatient facility, an 1,850-stall parking structure, CUP, road realignments, and a multipurpose research building. Future phases will include residential towers and a large replacement hospital. Learn more in person during this enlightening Gemba Tour.
Gaylord Pacific Hotel and Convention Center
The entire team, including the general contractor and all trade partners, have bought into the 5S program, which results in an exceptionally clean and organized job site, and just-in-time deliveries, with specified amounts of material, locations, and delivery schedules, that make the work easier and better. The project also includes a 4D schedule of the interior build-out that supports all horizons of planning: phase planning, look-ahead/make ready planning, weekly work planning, and daily learning. The Last Planners use this 4D schedule in weekly and daily planning sessions. Tour participants will receive a 5S Field Guide which explains the program and supports planning for 5S on their job sites.
